Summer\u00a0is upon us, and this year coronavirus is forcing most of us to\u00a0take our\u00a0vacations\u00a0in our home country.\u00a0This\u00a0represents\u00a0a crisis for large parts of the tourism industry worldwide\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and Norway is no exception\u00a0\u2013\u00a0but some\u00a0companies\u00a0can prosper from the situation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The market in Norway is huge.\u00a0Tourists are now increasingly looking for destinations that have not been\u00a0\u2018discovered\u2019\u00a0in order\u00a0to\u00a0get unique nature experiences, whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0glacier hiking, bird watching, salmon fishing or other\u00a0encounters. People are more concerned with quality than just a few years ago and are no longer as interested in queuing\u00a0to gaze over\u00a0a mountain top. They are also willing to pay for\u00a0unique experiences, says Rita Moseng\u00a0Sivertsvik\u00a0of\u00a0Ruralis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She researches nature-based tourism,\u00a0and together with colleague Magnar Forbord,\u00a0has\u00a0contributed to a\u00a0recent,\u00a0internationa\u00a0book,\u00a0<\/span>Nordic Perspectives on Nature-based Tourism<\/span><\/i><\/a>. One of the\u00a0book\u2019s\u00a0goals is to investigate the prerequisites for sustainable business development based on people’s travels to and in nature.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More corona-friendly tourism<\/h2>\n

In these times, short-distance tourism in nature is more relevant than ever\u00a0\u2013 both because we are\u00a0urged\u00a0to stay in\u00a0our\u00a0home country, and because small, dedicated companies are happy to receive smaller groups in spacious outdoor environments\u00a0where the risk of infection is\u00a0smaller. This meets at least some of the\u00a0challenges\u00a0of Covid, says Forbord.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Norway has approximately\u00a02,000 small and medium-sized tourism companies. Before the corona hit us, many of these\u00a0\u2013 in common with most of the tourism industry \u2013\u00a0focused on visits from abroad. However, researchers believe that nature-based tourism can just as easily be directed at Norwegians.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Experiences for life<\/h2>\n

These tourism companies are both creative and\u00a0adaptable, and\u00a0give the impression\u00a0they are\u00a0more than\u00a0aware of the\u00a0potential\u00a0Norwegian market. They are concerned with sharing nature experiences that visitors will remember and at the same time take care of nature, regardless of whether the tourists are local or come from China. The unique and sustainable are prioritized over mass tourism, says Moseng\u00a0Sivertsvik.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The passion for nature means that the small actors like to use themselves and their knowledge as part of the experience.\u00a0Norway does not have a\u00a0tradition of using a guide on trips, but with new target groups and\u00a0the\u00a0desire for other experiences, this is more in demand.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Extremely child-friendly<\/h2>\n

The target\u00a0market\u00a0has become wider. In addition to the fact that\u00a0more and more people want\u00a0extreme experiences, there are many, including families with small children, who\u00a0yearn for\u00a0simpler forms of outdoor life. This leads to greater variety and competence among tourists and requires a more differentiated offer, says Forbord.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nature-based tourism is an international phenomenon, but Norway\u00a0is especially\u00a0well positioned.\u00a0We have large and sparsely populated areas, rich in natural areas in the form of vegetation, mountains and fjords,\u00a0glaciers\u00a0and rivers.\u00a0And the fact that we have\u00a0\u2013 in contrast to many other countries \u2013\u00a0the right of public access makes nature largely accessible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to survive?<\/h2>\n

The question is how companies that run nature-based tourism on a small scale can become solid enough to survive. Since the companies are small, the employees often\u00a0must\u00a0take on\u00a0many different tasks and may lack competence in certain areas. The little ones\u00a0have to\u00a0fight to be seen and marketing is important. It is also important to have more legs to stand on to secure income throughout the year, and therefore many do more than just tourism. They also offer\u00a0services to\u00a0schools and businesses and arrange weddings and other gatherings locally. Some also combine\u00a0their\u00a0operations with agriculture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Common to the small players is that the job is also a passion, although of course they aim to make a living from nature-based tourism. Several\u00a0founders\u00a0say that they have involved the whole family to get the company going, and some\u00a0have\u00a0resigned from\u00a0permanent jobs. It is hard work, and they take risks, says Moseng\u00a0Sivertsvik.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Benefit from each other<\/h2>\n

The research shows that the actors want to work together to keep tourists\u00a0in the same area\u00a0for\u00a0longer\u00a0and\u00a0believe that they can benefit from each other. The growth in nature-based tourism is important for overall value creation in the tourism industry\u00a0and also\u00a0leads to highly educated people moving to outlying areas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The book\u00a0<\/span>Nordic Perspectives on Nature-based Tourism<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0is published by Edward Elgar\u00a0Publishers. Researchers associated with the\u00a0Biotour\u00a0<\/a>project, funded by the Research Council\u00a0of Norway, have contributed to the book. The\u00a0chapters\u00a0address topics such as tourism\u2019s resource base,\u00a0the\u00a0market,\u00a0the\u00a0companies\u2019 profile,\u00a0and innovation,\u00a0from a Nordic perspective.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
