The resistant bacteria can then be transmitted to humans, through direct contact with animals, food or via the spread of manure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you become ill due to a resistant bacterium and it causes a serious infection, antibiotic treatment may not work. What previously could easily have been treated can instead be life-threatening for both humans and domestic animals, says\u00a0Ruralis\u00a0researcher Richard Helliwell.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Looking into the future<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He leads the project LIMBO, which has two goals.\u00a0The first is to envision\u00a0new\u00a0types of\u00a0AMR-related\u00a0issues\u00a0different\u00a0to\u00a0those we face today.\u00a0What can lead to the problem occurring, how likely is it to happen, and how will it\u00a0develop? The answers will provide a foundation for assessing what is needed to\u00a0better\u00a0handle the various scenarios.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The second goal of the project is to understand how robust the current system for handling AMR is, and what risks the system\u00a0carries with it. In 30\u00a0years\u2019\u00a0time, both the challenges and the organization of Norwegian agriculture will be different. What risks do these changes\u00a0imply\u00a0for agriculture\u2019s ability to handle AMR? What will the critical factors\u00a0be?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tailoring\u00a0strategies<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By identifying these factors, we can tailor guidelines and strategies for agriculture with a view to combatting AMR and thus increase the probability of success. COVID-19, a transient\u00a0virus,\u00a0is\u00a0redefining\u00a0the political and economic landscape throughout the world, while AMR represents a constant challenge. Climate change and environmental pollution are contributing to the problem, Helliwell believes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the World Health Organization,\u00a0across the world\u00a0an estimated 700,000 people die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and other resistant microbes. AMR\u00a0reveals\u00a0something about the bacteria\u2019s ability to develop and spread new genes that are resistant to drugs. In this way, the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry can contribute to the development of both new genes and bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. In addition, the animals become a reservoir for bacteria that are already resistant, so that they can infect humans and animals again.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Threatening\u00a0modern medicine<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Antibiotic resistance threatens one of the fundamental pillars of modern medicine\u00a0\u2013\u00a0antibiotics. Antibiotics are not only used to treat the bacterial infections\u00a0themselves, but\u00a0are also important to reduce the risk of infection during surgery and chemotherapy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are two reasons why\u00a0concern that bacteria\u00a0are becoming\u00a0resistant to antibiotics has\u00a0proliferated\u00a0nationally and internationally. First, it is linked to the emergence of resistant bacteria, such as MRSA and ESBL\u00a0E.coli. These have caused deaths due to infections that were previously considered treatable.
