Urgency and pressures in critical mineral extraction – Potentials and pitfalls for just mining in Norway (URGENTMINE)

The demand for critical minerals is increasing rapidly. These metals are used in green technologies such as electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar panels, and play a key role in the transition to a low-emission society. At the same time, the growing pressure for faster extraction creates new challenges for nature, local communities and Indigenous rights.

The research project URGENTMINE investigates how Norway can address these dilemmas. The project aims to develop knowledge that supports more sustainable and equitable mineral governance, and to improve understanding of the political and economic drivers behind the current push for increased extraction.

While mineral extraction can generate economic value and strengthen resource security, it often causes significant environmental impacts and local conflicts. URGENTMINE examines three selected mining projects – the Fen Complex in Telemark, Nussir in Finnmark and Helleland in Rogaland – which represent different types of challenges related to environmental impacts, land-use and local participation.

The project takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining perspectives from the social sciences, humanities and planning studies. This provides a comprehensive understanding of how mineral extraction interacts with climate policy, environmental governance, Indigenous rights and regional development.

Knowledge generated by URGENTMINE will support policymakers, industry and local communities in making informed decisions about mineral extraction. The project seeks to strengthen the knowledge base for a responsible mineral policy that balances the need for resources with respect for nature, people and local democracy.
