Isabelle Hugøy

Researcher, PhD - PhD in Social Anthropology

Isabelle completed her PhD in Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen in 2025. Her doctoral thesis explores how farmers in Norway and Costa Rica perceive and practice sustainable agriculture in the face of contemporary socio-economic, environmental and climatic vulnerabilities. She also has experience from research projects on topics related to corporate social responsibility, state-ownership in energy corporations, and the unequal distribution of urban resources.

Currently, Hugøy works on the following projects: “Karbonmat” develops sustainable business models for soil carbon sequestration in Norway. “SolarFood” seeks to develop inclusive business models for solar food drying in the Himalaya region.

Hugøy has experience with long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Norway and internationally, research dissemination, peer review, and teaching—including supervision and examination at UiB and NTNU.
