Testing of technical solutions to prevent collisions with wild animals along the railway

This is a Swedish-Norwegian collaborative project that tests various technical sounds and visual effects that can contribute to minimize collisions with wildlife along the railway.

About the project

The research on the Norwegian side is coordinated by the research institute Ruralis – Department of Rural and Regional Research. The research in Phase 1 was carried out at feeding stations during the winter of 2020 and 2021, where we tested the game’s reactions to various sound signals as well as the reactions to sound in combination with light. The purpose was to find out which sounds have the greatest effect on cervidae, and thus will be most appropriate to use to scare the animals in a desired direction, ie out of the railway tracks. Now in phase 2 we will test the use of different sounds along the railway tracks and on the trains. The goal of the project is increased scientific knowledge that will provide a basis for developing effective warning systems.
