Within Norwegian cultural heritage management agriculture has always played a central role. The farmer is in many ways seen as the founder of the nation, therefore there is a close linkage between farming and Norwegian national identity. Although recent investigations show that 74% of the Norwegian population is for preserving agriculture at the same level as today, Norwegian agriculture is under strong pressure, due to critique of cost level and international pressure to deregulate and decrease the level of support. At the same time, the importance of agriculture for the production of collective goods is increasingly recognized.
