R-09/98 Women farmers in Norway

This dissertation examines women as farmers and as potential successors to family farms in Norwegian farming. The thesis consists of five articles, of which four is published in international journals and one in an edited volume. The notion women farmer refers in this work to women who have the main or sole responsibility for a farm operation. The empirical analysis is based of two separate data sets. The first data set consists of personal interviews with 90 women farmers and a control sample of 73 men farmers in nine municipalities in Norway. The second consists of in-depth interviews with a sample of young girls and boys with succession rights to family farms and a survey among their parents.
